independence Day is one of the favorite parties in the United States. So why not celebrate it by taking a tour of the Grand Canyon? Options include helicopter and plane flights, bus tours and whitewater rafting trips. All are exciting and are running at their regular times during the July 4 vacation.
Tours of the Grand Canyon begin from two locations: Tusayan, Arizona (the site of the Grand Canyon National Park Airport, sometimes called "GCA") and Las Vegas, Nevada. People who come from Phoenix and other places in AZ will want to take tours departing from Tusayan. I hope the National Park is really busy during the holidays on July 4, so book your tour at least one week in advance (two would be even better).
South Rim Tours
Two versions of helicopter tours depart from GCA and do in South Rim: one gives you 30 minutes of airtime; the other blows that up to 50 minutes. Although the shorter version flies from edge to edge (from south to north and back), I prefer the improved 50-minute flight because it does, but it also adds the eastern edge. When this tour ends, you will see up to ¾ of the entire park!

Air travel is also popular here. They follow the same route as the improved helicopter tour and last 50 minutes. A second finalist in popularity is the 15-mile course of calm water rafting through Colorado. Start at Glen Canyon Dam and end at the historic Lee's Ferry.
Vegas Tours
If you are going to live in Sin City, you can tour South Rim or West. Prices tend to be a little lower than the Grand Canyon tours from Tusayan.
It takes only 45 minutes for the helicopters to reach the West Rim from Las Vegas. All helicopter tours fly over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, but you can choose between air or landing flights.
My personal favorite is the exciting helicopter tour that lands in the background (where you will enjoy a picnic with champagne), especially when it extends to include the rafting tour of the Colorado and VIP access to the Skywalk. This is the famous "Glass Bridge" that allows visitors to walk 70 feet beyond the edge of the edge, with the bottom 4,000 feet below!
Bus tours to the south or west edge are incredibly popular and are affordable. The basic West Rim version is perfect for people with limited time or budgets, but an optional extension adds the exciting helicopter flight to the bottom. South Rim bus tours can be improved by adding the 30-minute edge-to-edge helicopter flight.
Air travel from Las Vegas also has an edge. The options for West Rim are similar to the options for helicopter tours, except for the price (air travel is cheaper). An excellent South Rim package flies direct and includes a 2½ hour bus tour inside the National Park.
Reserve now!
As I mentioned earlier, I hope that the July 4 vacation is a very busy time in the canyon. I urge you to book your tour as soon as possible. That way, you will have more options and you can get the best prices.
Speaking of prices, book your tickets on the Web, directly on the website of the travel company. Skip to the big travel brokers like Expedia, Orbitz, and Viator: they will charge you more. Just remember to complete your purchase on the travel company's website to qualify for an excellent online discount.
